A couple of hundred protesters gathered Tuesday outside the site of the gubernatorial debate. Most milled around or sought shade from the searing heat, until student supporters of Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown met in a face-to-face confrontation.

There was some finger-pointing and screaming into people’s faces, as the students hammed it up for the television crews and photographers.

Whitman’s students, wearing matching green T-shirts, chanted “Go, Meg, Go!” and “No More Reruns,” a reference to Brown’s lengthy political resume, including two terms as governor in the 1970s and 1980s. The young Brown supporters responded “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!” and “Can’t Buy Our Votes,” a reference to Whitman’s record-breaking spending in the campaign.
