The next question was on jobs. Meg Whitman touted her plan to cut certain taxes on businesses to improve the economy, including the “factory tax” on manufacturing equipment.

“If we lose manufacturing, we will lose the soul of our state,” she said.

She said she recently spoke with Texas Gov. Rick Perry who told her he goes on “hunting trips” in California –- for businesses.

Whitman has, more or less, delivered her stump speech answer to the question.

Jerry Brown said he would approach job-creation “quite differently,” accusing Whitman of following the “George Bush playbook.”

He pushes his plan to create green jobs –- “wind, solar and geothermal.”

Both have derided red tape. As mayor of Oakland, Brown said he cut through “dumb rules.” Whitman complained about “strangling” regulations.
