On Tuesday, Meg Whitman’s opponent for the Republican nomination for governor, Steve Poizner, put $2.5 million more of his own money into his campaign.

So Whitman, the billionaire former EBay chief, doubled down Wednesday and injected another $5 million into hers, according to campaign sources.

That brings Whitman’s total contributions from her personal funds to $64 million for the race; Poizner has put in about a third of that, at nearly $22 million.

So, as Whitman’s lead has appeared to shrink, according to private polls, here’s the $64-million question (once it would have been a $64,000 question, but as this campaign shows, there’s been a lot of inflation): Will all that money buy victory?
