Daryl Gates, the controversial chief of the Los Angeles Police Department during a turbulent time for the department, has died at 83.

Gates was chief when four officers were accused of beating motorist Rodney King. The subsequent case and acquittal of the officers involved marked a period of heightened racial and ethnic tensions in the department and in the city.
