If the Republican primary for governor truly is a competition to see who is more conservative, as it has appeared in recent days, then Steve Poizner won a victory Friday.

Poizner’s campaign announced the endorsement of conservative Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Rocklin). McClintock, a former state lawmaker, ran against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor in 2003.

“I trust Steve to restore Republican principles to California government,” McClintock said. “Steve Poizner is the only conservative candidate in this race and is serious about implementing real reform in Sacramento. I am convinced that Meg Whitman has nothing to offer other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s third term. That is something California cannot afford.”
