Former Secretary of State Rice endorses Fiorina in GOP Senate race

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has endorsed former Hewlett-Packard chief Carly Fiorina in the Republican Senate primary, Fiorina’s campaign will announce today.

“California needs a representative in the U.S. Senate who is prepared to make the tough decisions necessary to address our most pressing challenges, including job creation and national security. Based on my personal experience, I know Carly is the best person to send to Washington to advocate for the people of our great state in the Senate,” Rice said in a written statement. “Carly is an experienced and respected leader who has delivered results for those she has served in the midst of immense challenges. I am proud to endorse her today.”

Rice held a fundraiser for Fiorina last week in the Bay Area and plans to raise more money for her next month.

Rice served as President George W. Bush’s secretary of state from 2005 to 2009, and as his national security advisor from 2001 to 2005. She is currently a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a political science professor at Stanford University.

Fiorina worked with Rice when she served on the State Department’s Advisory Committee on Transformational Diplomacy.

Rice was appointed to the board of directors of Hewlett-Packard in 1992 and resigned the next year after she was named provost of Stanford. That was six years before Fiorina began working there.

But the high-profile Bay Area Republican women have crossed paths multiple times – both Rice and Fiorina were named as possible vice presidential picks for Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election; in 2003, they graced the cover of Fortune magazine together for a piece about powerful women.
