In a sign of the challenging reelection battle that U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer will face this year, former Vice President Al Gore is coming to Los Angeles on Saturday to raise money for her.

Boxer already has several million dollars in the bank, but she is preparing to seek her fourth Senate term in a politically challenging environment. The 18-year Democratic senator is likely to face voter backlash against both incumbents and the party that controls the White House and Congress. Early polling already shows a tightening race. And if former Hewlett-Packard chief Carly Fiorina wins the Republican nomination, Boxer will be facing a multimillionaire who has already tapped her checking account twice to fill her campaign coffers.

“With a tough reelection battle ahead, you can never have too many friends standing with you,” Boxer said in an e-mail to supporters Monday. “That’s why I’m glad that Al Gore is coming this Saturday, and that’s why I value your support so much, too.”
