Fiorina rivals use demon sheep video to raise money, mock her

GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina's video attacking Tom Campbell's candidacy took another strange twist, with Campbell and a third GOP candidate, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine), touting the bizarre production to help their own campaign efforts.

The video, which is intended to challenge Campbell’s claims of being a fiscal conservative, depicts a pastoral field of grazing sheep and an interloper -- a man in a sheep suit with red laser eyes -- who is intended to symbolize Campbell as a wolf in sheep's clothing. The production drew widespread ridicule in political circles and across the internet, and the tag #DemonSheep spread across  Twitter.

Campbell hopes to use the video to raise badly needed campaign contributions.

"With America's deficit hitting $1.3 trillion this year, Tom's looking forward to a mature and substantive debate on serious issues, not silly antics," Campbell's campaign wrote in an e-mail titled "Meltdown" that was sent to supporters Wednesday evening. "Carly's ad likens fiscal conservatives to sheep, and Tom to a demon sheep, without mentioning a single federal issue or proposing a single solution to America's economic woes. Seriously."

DeVore, the other candidate seeking the GOP nomination to unseat incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, also got in on the act, claiming the website http://www.demonsheep.org/ for the “Society for the Eradication of Demon Sheep From Our Political Discourse.” Clicking on a link leads back to DeVore’s campaign website and a message mocking Fiorina.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Fiorina campaign fell back on the old adage that any publicity is good publicity.

“Of course, the Democrats are all out there attacking the video which is both predictable and fine by us since the more people talk about it, the more people watch it, which of course is the whole point,” spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said in an e-mail to reporters.
