In the wake of a complaint from the Meg Whitman campaign, an independent expenditure committee has modified its paperwork with state election officials.

The committee formerly known as Level the Playing Field 2010 filed paperwork late Tuesday announcing its initial sponsors, and that its primary purpose was to oppose Whitman’s gubernatorial campaign.

The new official name of the committee is ‘Level the Playing Field 2010 Against Billionaire Meg Whitman for Governor, a Coalition of Nurses, Faculty and Painters Organizations.’

The committee has promised to spend millions against Whitman, but thus far has not yet reported receiving any contributions.[Updated 10:32 a.m. -- An earlier version of this story said the campaign was no longer running radio ads. Independent media buyers have confirmed Level the Playing Field has purchased some radio time in Fresno, San Francisco and Sacramento over the next several days.]
