A legislative proponent of gay marriage has introduced a new measure that would exempt members of the clergy from presiding over same-sex unions. State Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) introduced his measure Tuesday, in hopes of separating the gay marriage issue from disputes over religious freedom.

‘If you heard any number of the arguments of the proponents of Prop. 8, you would have thought there was no 1st Amendment right to freedom of religion,’ Leno told Capitol Weekly. He added that the bill would be an attempt ‘to put to an end some of the nonsensical statements made in support of Prop. 8.’
