Instead of shelling out $55 to see the bloated Police through binoculars, wondering if they really care about being there, I recommend renting "The Police: Around the World," a thrilling and hilarious documentary of their first world tour, when they were hungry and out for blood -- especially each other's. Their revved-up performance of "Born in the Fifties" on a ramshackle stage in front of 300 riveted Indians is madcap and breathtaking, and Sting's spitting on an unruly audience member in Paris reminds you that these guys once lived on the outskirts of punk.

Hollywood Bowl officially opened in 1922 on the site of a natural amphitheatre formerly known as the Daisy Dell, and has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since then. Shortly after the end of the 2003 summer season, the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County, which owns the Hollywood Bowl, replaced the 1929 shell with a new, somewhat larger, acoustically improved shell, which had its debut in the 2004 summer season. The Hollywood Bowl is a modern amphitheatre at 2301 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California, USA, that is used primarily for music performances. The Hollywood Bowl is home to a second resident ensemble, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The Hollywood Bowl is well known for its band shell, a distinctive set of concentric arches that has graced the site since 1929.

Kevin Bronson has covered emerging and indie music since 2002 in his weekly Buzz Bands column in the Calendar Weekend section of the L.A. Times. He adores caffeine, judicious use of falsetto and the 6-4-3 double play. He abhors exclamation points, modern country and any notion that New York City is the center of the cultural universe. He's older than any music blogger he knows but has been known to pogo. He'll try not to pretend.

Bronson's Buzz Bands show can be heard Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific time on the Internet radio station LittleRadio.com.
