Happy Hollows can see the finish line, and you can see them

04:26 PM PT, Jan 11 2008

Happyhollowsnew_2 The Happy Hollows are putting the final touches on their full-length debut -- final mixing this weekend, says management -- but before that, the Pixies/Sonic Youth-channeling trio bring their pretty paroxysms to the Echo tonight for a stint at Club Underground. No release plans for the record yet, but word is that a couple of labels are circling.

They are joined on the bill by the Gray Kid, performing for just the second time (New Year's Eve was the maiden voyage) with a backing band he's calling Spirit Animal. Many who have seen the Gray Kid perform around L.A. the past year and a half (counting me) have eagerly anticipated the rapper/crooner graduating from his one-man, mic-and-backing tracks routine. He's got people with chops behind him -- three-fifths of the band Oliver Future (Jordan Richardson, Josh Lit and Jesse Ingalls) as well as beatmaker Computer Jay.

Highlights for this weekend, Jan. 11-12-13

Tonight: The Start, with support from Mere Mortals and the Dollyrots, rock the Troubadour. ... The Black Heart Procession headlines the Spaceland. ... The Vandelles and Sky Parade are at the Scene. ... At El Cid for Pigeon John's festivities, it Blackbird and the Feather'd People. ... I know nothing about this band but just love the name: Petty Tom is on the bill at the Viper Room. ... And Jon Brion continues his stand at Largo, which includes a Saturday show.

Saturday: The French Semester and the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra visit in the Knitting Factory. ... Minnie Driver is at the Hotel Cafe. ... And Rocky Dawuni spreads goodwill at the Roxy.

Sunday: Patrick Park, Charlie Wadhams and Pink Mochi gather at Tangier for a benefit to help cover the medical expenses of local musician/sound engineer Aaron Finley, who is recovering from injuries sustained when he was attacked by a shark in the waters off Maui in October. It's a minimum $10 donation.

About the Blogger
Kevin Bronson
Kevin Bronson has covered emerging and indie music since 2002 in his weekly Buzz Bands column in the Calendar Weekend section of the L.A. Times. He adores caffeine, judicious use of falsetto and the 6-4-3 double play. He abhors exclamation points, modern country and any notion that New York City is the center of the cultural universe. He's older than any music blogger he knows but has been known to pogo. He'll try not to pretend.

Bronson's Buzz Bands show can be heard Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific time on the Internet radio station LittleRadio.com.
