This coachella is for the myspace/facebook generation, whereas previous Coachellas had something for the AIM/Napster, Cordless phone/casette tape crowd. And being of the AIM/Napster crowd, this is quite simply an awful coachella lineup. But Coachella has been such a wonderful experience and has been able to pull together some amazing reunions and talents, that I can forgive them for this one.
But it's not even a debate in my mind, I'm going to intermittently check on the show at the ATT Blueroom.
The Verve? They weren't that good even at their peak. I mean, at their peak they were putting out stuff as good as Oasis' recent material, and we all know how forgettable that is. The Raconteurs? They put out one critically-acclaimed album and they're headliners? Really?!
Steve Aoki and his followers are going to love this Coachella, the rest of us who aren't cool enough to befriend Linday Lohan will just have to venture out to Chicago...or New Jersey ::shudder:: for a better lineup.
I'm not entirely sure what Paul T was thinking, but my gut tells me he is holding punches back for the NJ incarnation that was recently announced. With C3/Live Nation "Vineland" hitting the east as well, i can't help but think they are just trying to save all the goodness for a new market. Hmmm.
Kevin Bronson Kevin Bronson has covered emerging and indie music since 2002 in his weekly Buzz Bands column in the Calendar Weekend section of the L.A. Times. He adores caffeine, judicious use of falsetto and the 6-4-3 double play. He abhors exclamation points, modern country and any notion that New York City is the center of the cultural universe. He's older than any music blogger he knows but has been known to pogo. He'll try not to pretend.
Bronson's Buzz Bands show can be heard Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific time on the Internet radio station LittleRadio.com.
fire up the bong, grab some ecstasy and start dancing.
it's a line-up for college stoners, aging hippies and ravers.

This is quite weak on the two-tiered headline level, although the Portishead reunion will be worth it (especially if they fly in the symphony).
The bottom tiered acts promises many, many surprises.
Jack Johnson? Really??? Oof.

Replace Johnson and Waters and hey presto! - that line up looks a lot more palatable.
