The Wombats aim to burrow their way into your hearts

02:23 PM PT, Aug 7 2007

ThewombatsI'm pretty sure there has been one Next Big Thing From England per week this year. This week's candidates to win your hearts with their sexy riffs and cool accents are the Wombats, who, with the requisite exclamatory press clippings from the likes of NME, play Cinespace tonight and Club NME at Spaceland on Wednesday.

These days a band can create an avalanche of buzz on the basis of one or two songs, and the Liverpool trio seems to have done just that. The catchy pop-punk on their debut EP gives the band the same kind of fun factor as recent imports the Kooks and the View. Stream "Backfire at the Disco" and "Kill the Director" here.

Got tickets for that sold-out Lily Allen show at the House of Blues Anaheim in September? Stay tuned. Her work visa has been revoked.

Touts for Tuesday, Aug. 7

Busy, busy night, and I will probably leave some names out, but: Robbers on High Street headline the Troubadour -- read my colleague Liam Gowing's preview here. The ridiculously catchy (and, naturally, here from the U.K.) 1990s open, and Mezzanine Owls play the early set. ... Alt-rock quintet After Midnight Project kicks off their Tuesday residency at the Key Club's Ruby night. ... It'll be a crowded house at the Prospector in Long Beach tonight, where the bill includes Gliss, the Moderates and Oslo (with new music, "The Rise and Fall of Lave and Hate" on the way in October). ... Gwendolyn (new album: "Lower Mill Road") performs at Bordello. ... New Orleans folkie Blair holds forth at the Silverlake Lounge. ... The Henry Clay People lead a seriously good indie rock lineup at Safari Sam's. ... Lost Highway artist Fionn Regan, behind "The End of History" (released last month), joins local Ferraby Lionheart at the Hotel Cafe. ... The Good Listeners have somehow outstripped 2005's "Ojai" with their new "Crane Point Lodge" -- they play Largo. ... And the always-fun Monolators play Mr. T's Bowl. Toldja there was a lot to do tonight.

Why No mention of The Mormons @ Mr. T's bowl?? They've been doing a residency there every Tuesday for the past 3 weeks now.

Hi Wang,

There are a lot of bands I don't mention. Sometimes they are bands I have not seen or heard, and therefore am not comfortable recommending. And sometimes they are bands I have seen and heard, and therefore am not comfortable recommending.

So are you saying you don't like The Mormons?
Or You've Never seen them?

I've seen the Mormons four or five times over the past couple years and admire their nicely pressed shirts.

Ah...You don't admire their Music and are "not comfortable recommending" them.
You could've just said that in the first place.

About the Blogger
Kevin Bronson
Kevin Bronson has covered emerging and indie music since 2002 in his weekly Buzz Bands column in the Calendar Weekend section of the L.A. Times. He adores caffeine, judicious use of falsetto and the 6-4-3 double play. He abhors exclamation points, modern country and any notion that New York City is the center of the cultural universe. He's older than any music blogger he knows but has been known to pogo. He'll try not to pretend.

Bronson's Buzz Bands show can be heard Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific time on the Internet radio station LittleRadio.com.
