Meet the Zimmers

01:23 PM PT, Jun 4 2007

A cover version of the Who's "My Generation" entered the British Top 40 chart at No. 26 last week, and that might be worth a news flash itself except that the artists performing the, er, oldie, are the Zimmers, perhaps the most elderly band on the planet.

The group, 40 members strong, was formed for a BBC documentary and features lead singer Alf Carreta, 90, as well as celebrity centenarian Buster Martin -- whose obscene gesture punctuates the end of the video. That's more than 3,000 years of talent in that video, kids.

Proceeds from downloads of the song will benefit charitable causes. The Zimmers are scheduled to appear on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on Tuesday. Rock it.

Aw, come on, the Zimmers aren't THAT much older than The Who.

About the Blogger
Kevin Bronson
Kevin Bronson has covered emerging and indie music since 2002 in his weekly Buzz Bands column in the Calendar Weekend section of the L.A. Times. He adores caffeine, judicious use of falsetto and the 6-4-3 double play. He abhors exclamation points, modern country and any notion that New York City is the center of the cultural universe. He's older than any music blogger he knows but has been known to pogo. He'll try not to pretend.

Bronson's Buzz Bands show can be heard Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Pacific time on the Internet radio station LittleRadio.com.
