Brother Ali, "The Undisputed Truth" (Rhymesayers) With The Undisputed Truth, Brother Ali has produced his most satisfying record yet. Backed by brassy, soulful beats from producer Ant (of Atmosphere fame), Ali seems relaxed and focused, delivering clever rhymes with a preacher's cadence reminiscent of underground legend Pharoahe Monch. And like Monch, Ali has the ability to successfully traffic in both the personal and the political.
As the record's breakout single "Truth Is" declares: the truth is here, in Ali, perhaps the best underground MC to emerge in the last half-decade. A rapper self-aware enough to claim he's a cross between Howard Stern and Howard Zinn, one conscious enough to recall Public Enemy and KRS-One. An album full of heart and skill, The Undisputed Truth will convince even the most jaded listeners.
Renowned for his fiery live shows, don't miss Brother Ali at Coachella on April 27 and at The Troubadour on May 23.

Goldrush, "The Heart is the Place" (Better Looking) Veteran British band often compared to The Byrds, The Flaming Lips and Wilco deliver 12 trippy tracks of pleasant pop-tinged psychedelia.

Limbeck, "Limbeck" (Doghouse Records) Although not to be confused with Charles in Charge sidekick Buddy Lembeck, Limbeck share a similarly sunny personality on their eponymous third LP. Local boys hailing from Orange County, the band's new album finds them further mining the alt-country sound and distancing themselves from their emo roots.
