Oh, ye of little faith
Hey, at least you were in good company. Check out the poll we had going up until kickoff.
I never saw this one coming. Not by a long shot. Some more observations and musing from the game:
- UCLA simply out-coached Tennessee. I've called Neuheisel-Walker-Chow (NeuWoW?) a three-headed monster, and they proved it tonight. The halftime adjustments were key. DeWayne Walker kept UCLA in the game with a staunch defense, and Norm Chow somehow kept the offense from a depression that would send most mortals into a tailspin. Of course, headed into overtime UCLA had the momentum. You can bet Rick Neuheisel did a better job of rallying his troops for the extra period than Phil Fulmer.
- Although UCLA's scoring turnaround didn't come until the final seven minutes of the game, the offense may have made their greatest comeback right after halftime. After hanging onto the ball for less than 13 minutes in the first two quarters, they controlled the clock for 9:16 of the third. That allowed the defense to get some much needed rest.
- There was an announced attendance of 68,546. Unlike most L.A. sporting events, they actually stuck around for the finish. Even the most senior UCLA administrators were impressed.
- When things were getting dicey, a game official asked Neuheisel, "You having any fun?" He responded, "I can't even believe how much fun this is."
- All week, Neuheisel said the Bruins only needed to get it to the fourth quarter, and they did.
- Only two of four team captains were healthy enough to make it to the overtime coin toss. Speaking of injuries, Logan Paulsen fractured his fifth metatarsal in his right foot and is expected to have a screw inserted (the same injury and surgery as Ben Olson). Marcus Everett has a dislocated big toe on his right foot. Kahlil Bell suffered a mild, high-left ankle sprain. Reggie Carter had a mild left MCL sprain. Both Bell and Carter are expected to get MRIs on Tuesday. Westwood is celebrating tonight, but doesn't want to think about next week.
- At halftime, Neuheisel told Kevin Craft, "I threw four interceptions in my first start too."
- Surprisingly, Norm Chow claims he didn't have much to say to his young quarterback at the break. He told Craft, "Just keep playing. We're only down one touchdown and we still have a chance."
- UCLA's much maligned offensive line only helped produce 29 net yards on the ground, but also only yielded just one sack.
