Air Neuheisel
"This is Romeo Foxtrot. Shall we dance?"
I had a funny dream last night. Rick Neuheisel was playing the role of Lt. Col. William Kilgore, assaulting the beachheads of Southern California as he sought to gain ground in the recruiting war.
"Put on psych-war operations. Make it loud."
Only it wasn't a dream. Lt. Colonel Neuheisel used a helicopter this weekend to fly from one high school football game to another, his latest tactic in building a an army football team at UCLA. Oddly enough, he was visiting a pair of games where he apparently already has the big recruits locked up. It doesn't smell like napalm in the morning so much as a publicity stunt on Friday night.
We'll have to give him a lot of credit on this one. If he figured out how to beat L.A. traffic, no wonder he figured out how to beat Tennessee.
Neuheisiel did run into Pete Carroll on the recruiting trail, noting, "I knew then we were on the right guy." Asked if he offered USC's coach a lift, he laughed. "No, I did not offer him a ride. I would have made him pay for gas, though."
Speaking of which, none of your tax dollars paid for the gas — it was covered by a booster. Hopefully not Brian Bosworth (whose nephews both play for the Bruins). UCLA's coach said that it seemed like a good use of his time, though, unlike The Boz (who arrived at his first Seattle Seahawks practice by chopper), he wasn't allowed to land on the field. Neuheisel went to a real airport and drove the rest of the way.
I can just imagine the lieutenant colonel now. "Petie don't surf." Well, actually he does. But that's besides the point. Rick flies.
