Petition for tradition

Uscucla_3 There was a time, a time before cable, when the home uniform reigned supreme. When teams wore anything that contrasted. This was an age when college football meant tradition. And in Los Angeles, one tradition was more colorful then the rest. It was shared by USC and UCLA. They were like gods walking amongst mere mortals. They had fight songs that could make a wolverine purr and unis so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo. In other words ... I've seen "Anchorman" too many times.

What I haven't seen enough of is the tradition in which UCLA and USC wear their home uniforms when they play for the Victory Bell. Both used to hold home games in the Coliseum, so naturally they would wear powder blue and cardinal when they faced off. Shortly after the Bruins moved to the Rose Bowl, the NCAA changed the rules and visiting teams were forced to wear white.

710 ESPN's Dave Dameshek recently got Rick Neuheisel and Pete Carroll on the record to support a return to the good ol' days. Unfortunately, there's more to it. The schools will need to ask the NCAA for a waiver, and you know how red tape can be. Instead of sticking cheerleaders outside some administrator's door, Dameshek (with help from Joyless Joey) is building support with a petition. I'm on board.

I concur with everything JOE BRUIN says.

Beginning in 2003 all of UCLA's athletic teams officially changed their uniforms to a new, unified shade of blue, True Blue.

You would think that the LA Times' UCLA blogger would know that wouldn't you? I guess that would be asking too much from a trojan.

http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/archives/id/24773/

"In fall of 2003, all of UCLA’s 22 varsity athletic teams will be “True Blue” for the first time.

"This year, UCLA Athletics and Associated Students of UCLA will launch their “True Blue” campaign. True blue is a shade of blue – darker than powder blue and lighter than royal blue"

"Beginning in 2003, True Blue will become a unifying brand name and tagline for all of UCLA athletics. It will become UCLA’s slogan on posters and advertisements, as well as the new shade of blue worn by UCLA’s athletic teams."

Thanks, WestLABruin. I'm surprised they didn't scrub it again. Unfortunately the LATimes is spinning in that maelstrom of the flushing toilet that is Sam Zell's Tribune Company. See if they scrub THAT.

Well, our friend Adam has edited his entry from "baby" to "powder" some time between yesterday and today, which is only slightly better. But a gesture that I'll accept as a partial mea culpa.
Adam, we're a tough crowd. Tough, but fair.

Wow, they did scrub it again. Adam had "baby blue" in the article at first, then changed it to "powder blue" after I wrote a rude comment, that he scrubbed. Then he scrubbed the other one where I spoke harshly about Mr Zell and the Tribune company and the Times.
I think we know what the Times and Adam are made of.

Notice the picture comes from the USC AD.

Hey Times, why don't you get a Real UCLA Bruin alumnus and fan to run this blog?

Hey Adam, my question is, with this attitude, what are you doing here?

Joe Bruin,

I tried to email you at the address you provided but you don't seem to have received the message.

There was a mistake and I corrected it. Mea culpa. I'm sure you'll be glad to know I've hurriedly typed "SUC" instead of "USC." We're human. It happens.

Your last comment was scrubbed due to profanity. I'm pretty sure I've implemented a much more liberal comment approval policy than we've had before on this blog but we have to keep it within reason. Please contact me directly with your email address and I'll be happy to forward you the rest of my message. You can reach me at adam@laist.com.

Thanks!
Adam

Also, I asked both schools for a photo, by email, at the same time. USC happened to respond first. I cropped it to make it appear more balanced than what I originally received (which had cardinal and gold borders). I've got strict copyright considerations to follow, and that's why you'll always see credit given on a photo that was not taken by me (exception: "free promotion" images like book/magazine/cd/dvd covers).

Tradition and Bruins ROCK!

Wow either this is the oldest news since the departure of Karl "The Thinker" Dorrell or I've been liviing a waking dream for the past 6-months. Didn't Coaches Neuheisel and Carroll already lay the gauntlet down on this one? I have an article from earlier this year tagged somewhere that clearly states this year's Bruin-Trojan showdown will feature a return of both home jerseys. Based on NCAA's "rules" (don't get me started) one team (probably the visitor) is going to be penalized so the other has agreed in principle to give up a timeout. But I guess "I WAS DREAMING WHEN I WROTE THIS..."
