Bruin SportsWire: Selden picked fourth overall
At the start of a busy week for Bruin teams, a nice honor for one of the top softball pitchers in the nation means another UCLA star will be playing professionally.
Softball:
>> Senior pitcher Anjelica Selden was the fourth overall selection in the National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft, by the New England Riptide. It means that Selden will be playing professional softball following the conclusion of the 2008 season at UCLA. She’s off to a good start, with a 4-1 record and 1.40 ERA in the first two weeks of the season. She’s struck out 40 in only 30 innings so far. Selden had a one-hitter Sunday as the Bruins (8-2) eased past Wisconsin, 4-1 on the final day of the UNLV Lousville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Men’s Golf:
>> UCLA finished second in the John Hayt Invitational held in Ponte Vedra, Fla., at Sawgrass Country Club. The Bruins finished four strokes back of Alabama, shooting one stroke better than the Tide over the final two rounds, but five strokes worse in the first round. Jason Kang (-2) tied for second in individual play, shooting a final-day 68, the best individual round of the tournament. Defending champion Kevin Chappell (+3) tied for 12th overall.
Women’s Gymnastics:
>> The Bruins had no trouble with California in Berkeley on Sunday, improving their dual record to 11-0 with a 195.225-189.425 victory. Anna Li won the all-around for the fifth time in six meets and UCLA had a seasonal best of 49.4 on the uneven bars. How good are the Bruins? The answer is coming as No. 2 Utah arrives for a dual match in Pauley Pavilion on Sunday.
Women’s Water Polo:
>> Offensive-minded senior defender Jillian Kraus was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Week with USC’s Michelle Stein, thanks to scoring nine goals in three UCLA wins this past weekend. Kraus now has 30 goals in 13 games this season for the No. 1-ranked Bruins, tied for the team lead with junior forward Katie Rulon. The Bruins won their Sunday match by a 19-7 count over No. 14 Long Beach State with Kraus tallying four goals.
