UCLA-USC postgame III: ball of confusion

Now that the Bruins have ended their regular season at 6-6, when will Athletic Director Dan Guerrero make his move to dismiss or keep Coach Karl Dorrell? Only Guerrero knows what is next:

>> UCLA’s bowl situation is completely confused. The Bruins will end up fourth in the Pac-10 with a 5-4 record, but the Pac-10's bowl situation is unclear. USC is on to the Rose Bowl, but if Arizona State defeats Arizona tonight, the Sun Devils will be conference co-champs and could end up in the Fiesta Bowl. That game was originally created to give ASU a place to play when it was winning WAC championships but had no bowl to go to.

If that happens, third-place Oregon State would be elevated to the Holiday Bowl and UCLA could end up in the Sun Bowl in El Paso against South Florida.

>> With Oregon State beating Oregon in double overtime, 38-31, and Stanford (!) defeating Cal, 20-13, the conference’s bowl-eligible teams include USC, Arizona State, Oregon State, UCLA, Oregon and Cal (6) with Arizona’s fate still to be determined. The Pac-10 has six bowl tie-ins.

Sorting out UCLA’s bowl picture could delay Guerrero’s announcement on Dorrell by a day or so. Guerrero  also will have to meet or speak with Chancellor Gene Block before any action is finalized, and then there is the matter of meeting with Dorrell in either case.

>> UCLA’s football awards banquet is Thursday; Guerrero fired Bob Toledo after the 2002 season (UCLA was 7-5 at the time) on the Monday after the final game of that season against Washington State. But would he wait until Friday and let the banquet take place first?

Only Guerrero knows and if no announcement is made Sunday, will he be at Sunday night’s UCLA-Texas game?
