Monday Media Day I: "All I know is I don’t like the green."
Bruin cornerback Trey Brown is not only the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week, but he’s also a comedian. A sampling from Monday’s press conference:
>> Asked to recall some of his "greatest hits" in talking with opposing receivers, Brown launched into agent mode . . . with a smile: "I think the NCAA would have a little problem with me and my greatest hits because we’d have to sell 'em, go on eBay, they got YouTube out there, MySpace, they have all types of stuff out these days; we’ll have to set that up on the side sometime.
"A lot of times people want to think when you talk noise out there, it’s all trash talk. It’s not really like that all the time. It’s conversation when you’re discussing with the opposing people sometimes; you just kind of get a feel for what the wide receiver is doing and what he wants to do out there. So it’s not always trash talk, it’s just nice conversation."
>> What about winless Notre Dame this weekend? "They’re desperate for a win and so are we.
"All I know is I don’t like the green. I don’t even like money this week, that color. Before I came in here, I threw my wallet in the trash. I don’t like those guys and they don’t like us.
"Each team this week is 0-0; we’re trying to get one win this week. That’s our mind-set this season, to be 1-0 each week."
>> Asked when the last time he played against a receiver he couldn’t cover, he replied to a roar from the assembled press, "I haven’t been in that situation.
"If I’m ever in that situation, I’m going to be honest. If there’s a guy out there that I cannot cover, I will sit here and I’ll say ‘he got me on this one’ so I need to mix it up. I don’t feel there is anybody out there that I can’t cover. I’ll line up with whoever you want to put out there."
Brown did note that last year’s Notre Dame loss in the final minute of the game is in the back of the player’s minds, but only to underline the necessity to finish games well. "Every day at practice we’re getting better and getting better and we’re working on finishing, you can see that last weekend in how we finished the game against Oregon State."
Brown said his father, Theotis, a great Bruin fullback from 1976-78, would be out to watch him play against Notre Dame. "He’s breaking down tape already."
