Monday practice report: Punter Perez to pull double duty

Punter Aaron Perez will likely be the holder for field goals this season for freshman Kai Forbath, replacing quarterback Patrick Cowan, who held last year.

Perez held on Sunday for a successful Forbath field goal try and the Bruins worked on special teams for part of their two-session practice on Monday. UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell noted that with the Pac-10's travel restrictions, having Perez perform both the punting and holding duties will save a seat on the plane. And, as one observer noted, "they hang out together anyway."

And Cowan is probably better off not having to hold, and able to concentrate on being ready as a back-up to Ben Olson.

The injury situation is looking up with safety Chris Horton moving toward rejoining practice and negative MRIs on offensive guard Shannon Tevaga’s wrist and fullback Michael Pitre’s knee. Offensive lineman Micah Reed also suffered what was described as a minor injury.
