Chevy Equinox fuel cell SUV spotted on 405

Alert Bottlenecker Chris Bucka spotted this Chevy Equinox fuel-cell-powered SUV on the 405 yesterday and managed to snap a photo.

Earlier in the summer Chevy started testing the vehicles in Southern California, New York and Washington, D.C. The idea is to see how they fare in day-to-day traffic. The vehicle runs on hydrogen, so it doesn't emit any greenhouse gases.

Whether fuel cells come to market is still an open question. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids have a big head start, plus there's the little matter of building a network of hydrogen fuel stations.

At present, there are only a few stations in the state open to the public -- one is at Santa Monica and Federal, near where the photo was taken -- but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he wants to greatly expand fuel cell vehicles in the state.
