Bottleneck Bulletin: Orange County's carpool lane revolution. The first conversion of carpool lanes that will allow continuous access to vehicles with two or more occupants will be implemented along a stretch of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway, a county official said today. Representatives of the Orange County Transportation Authority will announce Wednesday which stretch of the 55 will be the first to eliminate double-yellow lines that bar motorists from entering or leaving the carpool lane except at certain intervals, said Joel Zlotnik of the OCTA. It'll be the 55 north between the 5 and 91. They've already started the re-striping.

This terrible idea will kill people; that's for sure. A rediculous idea.

Open access carpool lanes on the 55 freeway, another dumb idea. These lanes were designed to be limited acess in order to increase the safe speed/flow volume increasing vehicle and thus person carrying capacity. Another case of political "micro" engineering. This will result in more congestion and an increased likelihood of accidents in the HOV lane. Then due to increased congestion in the HOV lane, then we can convert it to a tolled "congestion pricing" lane, and that will save us?

Open access carpool lanes onthe 55 freeway, another dumb idea, these lanes were designed with limited access to maintain a higher/safer speed/flow rate, with more vehicle and thus person capacity... More political "micro" engineering ignorance? This will certainly increase congestion and accidents, resulting in more congested HOV lanes, and then "congestion pricing" can save us?
