Save gas money, buy $28,300 electric vehicle

A Rancho Cucamonga seller has posted an electric-powered 2003 Toyota RAV on eBay. The vehicle has 127,611 miles on it and bidding started at $10,000 three days ago and is now up to $28,300. But the price hasn't risen since early Monday afternoon.

Better hurry: bidding ends Saturday night at about 9 p.m.

Pricegraph I wrote about a similar sale on eBay last week. That turned out to be a fraudulent sale, but people from the clean car advocacy group Plug in America say they know the seller and this one is the real thing.

Plug in America said it has  crunched the numbers, and powering the electric RAV is kind of like paying 81 cents a gallon for gasoline. This graphic shows the last time gas prices were at that level was in the late 1970s. On the graphic, 'nominal' means unadjusted for inflation.

A paid-for car works best for me too. Better driving habits helps gas mileage but we've compared some of the "other methods" at inform-me2 and met with good success. Some fuel optimizers work, some don't...

yours truly, Johnny Dollar

The best car to drive is a car that is paid for.
I am less affected by the price of gas; I can
buy a lot of fuel each month for what some
one else is throwing down the car payment,
insurance payment, new car registration
payment rat-hole.
Each time a new Prius pulls along side me,
I smile wondering how many more monthly
payments she has to make.
We are in a rat-race; and the rats are winning.

Great post. Electric may be the way to go.
