Adopt a highway? Not right now

Road rage

The Times' Richard Marosi last year wrote about the controversy of an anti-illegal immigration group getting an "adopt a highway" sign near the U.S.-Mexico border. Now, the Associated Press reports this flap has apparently caused a suspension of the program:

State transportation officials have temporarily suspended all new applications for a highway adoption program. California’s Department of Transportation says it is evaluating guidelines for the Adopt-a-Highway program, which allows private individuals or groups to sponsor roadside litter cleanup. Groups with existing sponsorships will not be affected. Agency spokesman Hayden Manning says it’s not clear how long the review will take. An anti-illegal immigration group in San Diego accused the agency of using the suspension to block its participation in the program. The San Diego Minutemen sued the transportation agency in February after it rescinded the group’s adoption of Interstate 5 near a Border Patrol checkpoint.

Would Adopt A Highway allow LaRaza sponsorship?

yours truly, Johnny Dollar

Anyone should be allowed to sponsor a highway
as long as they toe the party line.

Susan

Well, Paul, what's wrong with it is that the Minute-men are basically the southwest version of the KKK. Regardless of anyone's view of immigration, the leaders of that organization are extremists full of hatred of latino people in general, and not, as they claim, illegal immigrants. If some road in Alabama was sponsored by the Stormfront guys (neo-nazis), do you think that would be appropriate? Think anyone might object?

The worst thing about how the press handles these Minutemen is to ignore their violently racist rhetoric and act as if they just have "political opinions". They're racist filth, and should be treated as such.

Paul

I don't see what's wrong with letting them clean up a stretch of highway. I don't agree with their politics, but this seems like a no-brainer.
