More big rigs from Mexico?
Sounds like it's crunch time on the issue of allowing more Mexican cargo trucks to use U.S. highways:
The Bush administration urged a federal appeals court Thursday to let Mexican cargo trucks cross the border and freely travel anywhere in the country, arguing that to do otherwise could strain diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Mexico. The Teamsters Union on Wednesday asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to stop the program, which could go into effect as early as Saturday. The union argues that the administration plan, which would let as many as 100 registered Mexican trucks deliver their cargo anywhere in the country for the next year as part of a "demonstration program," would endanger public highways because safety issues have not been resolved. This is great, when I think of a country with clean enviromentally friendly trucks..Mexico doesn't come to mind. Of course, I am sure no companie would have a driver that might sneak 20-100 illegals in in the back of their truch either.

This is an EXCESSIVELY bad idea.
#1: There's absolutely NO guarantee that Mexican drivers actually know how to handle those trucks on US roads and under US weather conditions. We have far, far, FAR greater variation in our weather conditions than Mexico does, and I have no confidence that these drivers will be required to have any additional training to compensate.
#2: There are no safeguards in place regarding the condition of these trucks in terms of passing any kind of safety or emission controls tests (both of which are required of ALL the US or Canadian owned and driven trucks on the road!) nor is there any ability to control load weights or to enforce any fines these drivers incur.
#3: We already have ILLEGAL MEXICANS stealing the construction jobs out from under American citizens. Now you think it's a good idea to turn the VERY LAST INDUSTRY were a high school drop graduate can walk in, and get a job that pays middle class wages in most states?
WHAT THE FFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't give a rat's patoot how unhappy it makes the Mexicans.
AMERICAN TRUCKERS ON AMERICAN HIGHWAYS. PERIOD.

"could strain diplomatic relations between Mexico and the US..."
I could give a flying Cleveland what a foreign country views of the US is.
What do other countries think of the US? Answer this question:
1) How many people are trying to get out of the US?
2) How many people are trying to get into the US?
(which way are they swimming?)
