Three-day weekend: Sad numbers

Crash Thirty-two people lost their lives on California roads over the Memorial Day weekend. Drunk driving arrests dropped slightly:

Seven people died on Los Angeles County roads patrolled by the CHP over Memorial Day weekend, the same number as last year, and drunken driving arrests were up from 244 last year to 315 this year, the CHP reported today. Statewide, motor vehicle deaths increased from 28 last year to 32, and drunken driving arrests fell, from 1,639 last year to 1,614 this year, according to the CHP. The 78-hour maximum enforcement period started at 6:01 p.m. Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. yesterday. The CHP’s statistics do not include traffic deaths investigated by municipal agencies or drunken driving arrests made by local law enforcement. (CNS)
