Olympics like Chicago's urban feel
Chicago beat out L.A. in the U.S. bid for the 2016 summer Olympics. Officials have not exactly said why L.A. was passed over (traffic was an earlier concern). Chicago was pushing a plan that located many events in a small urban area, with easy walking and plenty of mass transit:
Chicago planned to focus on the compact, athlete-friendly nature of its plans, which would center the Games in the heart of downtown and the city's parks, creating an Olympic celebration in a striking setting and making travel times for athletes minimal.

it's sad because the olympics would have given us a firm deadline for goals, rather than open ended glacial pace they currently let projects go to.

Dodged that bullet.
If Chicago wants it, Chicago can have it.
By 2016, the Olympics will have gone the way of the World's Fair.

I am glad that LA did not get the Olympics. The last thing we need is for our leaders to have one more thing on their plate. Let them fix the roads, the traffic, the schools, the crime rate and then we can talk about the Olympics.
