Traffic that makes you laugh (or cry)

The story (or joke) goes like this. When someone asked Elizabeth Taylor if she had any advice for young people in show business, she replied "Take Fountain." This is a reference to Fountain Avenue, which is (or used to be) a less congested alternative to Sunset or Santa Monica boulevards through Hollywood. But a Google search also attributes the "Take Fountain" line as Bette Davis' dying words! In any case, the Bottleneck Blog heard another funny L.A. traffic line the other day from a colleague here at The Times:

When I left the city desk in downtown Los Angeles [Thursday night] at 7, I mentioned I needed to be in Santa Monica for a dinner appointment by 7:30. "You'll be lucky if you get there in time for breakfast," the paper's police reporter shouted after me.

She got there on time.

We consider ridesharing with the HOV lanes and still get idiots who use it alone, assuming HE'S LATE FOR WORK!

Why not consider all lane freeway use scheduling?

All Trucking shippers, haulers, heavy rigs use the freeway only in am hours from midnight to 6 AM for deliveries and pickups.
All cars, light trucks and buses use the freeways from 6 AM to 11 AM to get to work for the day.
All carpools and buses only on the freeway during lunching hour from 11:30 AM to 2 PM.
All cars and carpools and buses allowed for shopping and school pickup times at 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
All cars, light trucks and buses use all freeway lanes from 5:30 PM to 7 PM to get home from work.
All cars use freeway lanes for evening activities from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM.

This way perhaps it would have more efficient traffic flow and less clogging of too many vehicles at one time.

Just a thought.

a tired driver.

Why do we have to laugh or cry?

Can't we take action?

Roger Snoble has stated that at 1.3 people per car, there would be no traffic congestion. Yes, rideshare or carpooling. But why are we not funding it? Not the HOV lanes, but the helping of people find each other to carpool. The rideshare matching services.

Can't we demand that our County Supervisors properly fund rideshare matching services? Can't we demand that the will of the voters of Riverside County be honored and stop interfering with ridematch.info? Can't we get our elected officals to choose to protect the health of our children and the commuters instead of the fat budgets of the MTA?

http://trafficbulldog.org is a commuter advocacy group working toward 1.3 people per car.
