You’ve taken your share of cardio dance classes, even tried some Zumba and Yoga Booty Ballet to mix things up. But despite the great exercise, you still don’t feel like you’ve found a workout that allows you to really let loose the way you feel when you’re in a nightclub dancing the hours away.

Jennifer Brugh knows exactly how you feel.

That’s why she created Nightclub Cardio, an amalgam of aerobics and club dancing. But unlike most themed workouts that take place in gyms, this one is actually in a nightclub -- Level 3 on the third level of the Hollywood and Highland complex.

‘Basically this came out of a personal need,’ Brugh says. ‘I always had this grand dream of going to a nightclub in my sneakers and workout clothes and just dancing for exercise.’

Nightclub Cardio debuted in Houston (where Brugh is from) last March, and made its Los Angeles introduction in January. The class consists of easy-to-follow dance and aerobics moves set to a variety of dance music provided by a DJ. But that’s not all -- during the class a ‘Soul Train’ line may spontaneously break out, and instructors allow participants time for some free dance. Since the setting is a real nightclub, there are no mirrors or bright lights to mar the atmosphere. Local experienced fitness instructors keep the energy high.

So far the class has attracted a wide demographic of present, future and past clubgoers, including teens, baby boomers and beyond -- even whole families attend. ‘People say that their clubbing days are over,’ says Brugh, ‘but now they have the ability to go to a nightclub between 6:30 and 7:30 at night.’

The Level 3 classes take place every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door, $12 if you preregister on the Nightclub Cardio website, and buying classes in bulk offers further discounts.

‘It’s great to see everyone come out and enjoy themselves and get a really good workout,’ says Wendy Parker, Level 3’s director of special events. ‘It’s a great vibe and no one is judging you.’
