Pandemic H1N1 influenza is already starting to be felt on college campuses around the country, according to the first weekly report by the American College Health Assn. During the last week, 1,640 cases of infection by the virus, commonly known as swine flu, were reported by the 165 universities participating in the surveillance. Fifty-five percent of the universities reported cases. There was, however, only one report of a hospitalization and no deaths linked to the virus.

The highest rates of infection were observed in the Southeast and the far Northwest, with some states showing rates as high as 124 cases per 10,000 students. Nationwide, the rate was 7.9 cases per 100,000.
