David Lazarus: What’s wrong with single-payer health insurance?

The House of Representatives reauthorized the State Children’s Health Insurance Program on Wednesday. That is the program that provides health insurance to children from lower-income households. President Bush vetoed reauthorization of the program last year. But lawmakers hope a bill will be on President-elect Barack Obama’s desk next week and that he will sign it soon after taking office.

Why not? says consumer advocate and Los Angeles Times business columnist David Lazarus. In the video commentary above, Lazarus points out that as unemployment grows, more people will lose their employer-based health insurance and will rely on such programs.
