EGYPT: Islamic leader condemns Osama bin Laden's sea burial

The head of Cairo's Al Azhar institution, the most influential seat of Sunni Muslim learning, said that the burial of Osama bin Laden at sea was a violation of Islamic tradition.

The action “runs contrary to the principles of Islamic laws, religious values and humanitarian customs," Sheik Ahmed Tayeb was quoted as saying by Associated Press.

The customary Muslim practice is to place the body in a grave with the head pointed toward the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Sea burials are permitted only when death occurs on a ship, and the body cannot be quickly brought to shore, religious scholars said.

U.S. officials said a burial at sea was chosen after Bin Laden was killed in a firefight in Pakistan because no country would accept the remains. They said Muslim tradition was followed, with the body washed, wrapped in a white sheet and buried within 24 hours.

If I have Bin Laden in my hands, I will have him hogtied and put him alive in a pig enclosure, with some hungry pigs inside.
He was lucky.
I lost a girl friend in the WTC.

hahahahaa ! you all make me laugh that commented talking about 9/11 then what about he thousands of Palestinians including children and women who are INNOCENT being killed everyday where is there justice and until you can actually bring forward a CLEAR prove that osama bin ladden was behind the 9/11 act then stay quiet.

As of the death of Osama Bin Laden, I find there's been a metaphorical cloud of mystery surrounding the consequences. I myslef have been doing a bit of reading and have found the following article one of the more clear and reliable ones. (here's a link, if you'd like a look: Well anyway, hope this helped a little with context, and I'm sure more will come up as the media fuss calms down a little.

That might be the longest run-on sentence Ive ever read, Adam B. Thanks for the laugh!

Bin Laden is no Muslim. He is anything but. His body should have been burned and his ashes should have been scattered at sea not buried at see. What they did with his body shows how naive we still are. I know that they tried to be respectful and such but just saying we gave him muslim burial is offensive to me and millions of other good muslims who disagree with his ideology and thinking. He is contrary to what a muslim should be and he should not have been given a muslim burial; first, because he is no muslim and just saying that he is one is offensive to us. It is like saying we gave Hitler a Christian burial, for example; second, his followers do not really care whether he was buried according to muslim tradition or not. To them, he is a martyr anyway.
I also should not blame Mr. Tayeb because he is speaking from a religious and humanitarian point of view like what any religious person would say.
That also shows that our government still lacks the knowledge and thinking required in dealing with these situations.

Americans are not celebrating the death of a human being; we are celebrating Justice and the great courage of our troops. One thing the Saudis and the other countries agreed on, was that they did not want the body. It would have cost too much money to safeguard the body. I think it was better to dispose of it quickly.

Osama Bin Laden's actions ran contrary to christianity. Almost 3000 Americans buried under tons of rubble and dust that most of them ended up in a land fill and never recovered. So get over it Mr. Tayeb.

Do they really think that the U.S. was going to allow his body to be paraded through the streets as a martyr? He deserved nothing from us, but to appease Muslims, his body was treated with respect. How many hundreds of Muslims, blown to pieces by Al Qaeda, found themselves pointing anywhere? Where is your outrage at these barbarian actions?

The action “runs contrary to the principles of Islamic laws, religious values and humanitarian customs," Sheik Ahmed Tayeb was quoted as saying by Associated Press.

Wow and what about 9/11?

Issue Makers are Never Satisfied. Now, they would ask WHY OSAMA WAS NOT HALAAL? And why killed by Bullet ? It's Un Islamic.

Boo Hoo

Americans, America will be ALL MUSLIMS soon, and SHARIAH LAW will be followed in all the States. Who will stop Muslims? NONE. HAHAH

It's always hilarious to hear from Muslim leaders concerning their customs and traditions. They embrace the most rabid, murderous members of their religion as if they were Gods. The minute anybody even utters an opinion about allah they become savages.

What a joke of a religion.

all the cheering and celebrating is rather unseemly to me.....

how exactly does that honor our dead?

how can we take pride in trillions of dollars, and the best of technology and skill sets to assasinate one rather unimportant man?

did we make a martyr anew? or is that now that Mr. Crazy Colonel is in our sights, we had no more need for OBL....other than as a ratings boost?

"624. If it is feared that an enemy may dig up the grave and exhume the dead body and amputate its ears or nose or other limbs, it should be lowered into sea, if possible, as stated in the foregoing rule."

Seriously? There's concern about the customary Muslin practice?? Bin Laden should have died falling from a fiery building, with no remains anywhere, like the thousands of people who died on 9/11.

lol this is so funny how the u.s are like babies with their wording and stories and you yanks believe it hahaha, your day is coming soon you have no money left because of war munger politicians and they cannot afford i massive cover up so they just say we buried him at sea hahaha like they ever cared of muslim tradition and it aint muslim tradition anyway, they could of easily got the body back and showed the whole world, obama watched a live feed of the raid, would we like to see that, also they say the the compound was burnt or was on fire lol how come in the photos they show it looks like someone just messed it up and chucked blood everywhere, pay some paki $1 and they would do it, that did not look like no mansion to me.
