A group calling itself U.N. Act Now has launched an online petition on Facebook calling for the United Nations to take action, such as imposing a no-fly zone, in order ‘to end the killing taking place in Libya.’

Declaring that ‘monstrous acts’ are taking place in the North African nation, resulting in the deaths of Libyan citizens, the group called on U.N. member nations to recognize and halt what it described as genocide.

The petition lays out the U.N.’s definition of genocide as meaning ‘any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such a) killing members of the group; b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; c) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part ... and others.’

The petitioners, whose stated goal is to garner 10,000 signatures, call on U.N. member nations and the body’s Security Council ‘to act now and end the violence taking place against the citizens of the country of Libya.’

‘We urge this for the peace and freedom of the citizens of Libya; for the peace and freedom of the country of Libya; and for the peace and freedom of the world,’ the petition says.
