News agencies in the Libyan capital of Tripoli reported intensified fighting as security forces loyal to embattled strongman Moammar Kadafi shot at protesters converging in central streets after Friday prayers.

‘Libyan forces shoot protesters: Several people reported dead as tens of thousands of Libyans take to the streets,’ the Al Jazeera network reported via Twitter.

At least four protesters were killed in shooting near Tripoli’s Green Square, the Associated Press reported.

Kadafi’s forces also opened fire on hundreds of protesters in western Tripoli, Reuters news agency said, citing reports from participants that two people died in that clash.

While the demonstrators demanding that Kadafi step down were attacked in the capital, they held off attempts by security forces to retake Zawiya and Misurata, where rebels are now in control, the news agencies reported.
