LIBYA: Map of areas controlled by anti-government forces

Anti-government forces are taking control over more cities in Libya, even as Moammar Kadafi fortifies Tripoli. The city of Zawiya, just 30 miles west of of the capital, appeared to be falling to anti-government forces while fighting continued in Sabratha to the west.

Meanwhile, cities such as Derna and Benghazi appear to be controlled by anti-government forces, some of whom have sent fighters to Tripoli. Leaders in Benghazi said they had created a national council that would help free regions of the country from Kadafi’s grip, but that it did not want foreign governments to intervene. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday that the United States was ‘reaching out’ to opposition groups in the east.
