EGYPT: Cairo recalls its ambassador to Algeria after soccer violence

ALeqM5h0v8ZdgW52Mq5n3YHsVtyQ0ur-ZA

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki confirmed today that Egypt recalled its ambassador to Algeria after Egyptian fans were attacked by their Algerian counterparts following the two countries' playoff match in the 2010 World Cup qualifications held in Khartoum, Sudan, on Wednesday.

The incident comes days after Algeria's ambassador to Cairo, Abdel Qader Hadjar, was summoned by the Egyptian government to explain violence against Egyptians living in Algeria in the days leading up to the crucial match, which Algeria won 1-0. Hadjar was summoned once again today, hours before a decision was issued to recall Egypt's ambassador in Algiers for "consultations."

The Foreign Ministry announced that it informed Hadjar of "Egypt's extreme displeasure with the assaults on Egyptian citizens who went to Khartoum to support the Egyptian team."

"Egypt also expressed its outrage and its denunciation after continuing reports and many appeals from Egyptian citizens residing in Algeria over the assaults and intimidation they face," the statement to Hadjar concluded.

By defeating Egypt, Algeria won a berth in the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa. But the game was marred by tensions as Egyptian supporters and celebrities who were accompanying their national team called for help by phoning satellite television channels, describing how tough it was to leave the stadium amid Algerian fans' attacks.

Some Egyptian fans said they were forced to find shelter in homes and villas offered by Sudanese residents until the situation calmed down. Egyptian Health Minister Hatem El Gabaly said today that 21 Egyptians were injured as a result of the post-match assaults.

The soccer violence started on Saturday when Egyptians hurled stones at a bus carrying Algerian players from the Cairo airport to the city's stadium before an earlier qualifying match between the two teams. Three Algerian players were injured.

I THINK EGYPT DESERVE WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONE WHO STARTED THIS WAR WITH THAT MEDIA ASSHOLE AMRO ADIB HE ACTUALLY TAKES THE BLAME FOR WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN THIS TWO NEIGHBOUR COUNTRIES , AFTER SEEING THE EGYPTIAN SIDE OF THE STORY I THINK EGYPT THEY DESERVE IT ALL AS THEY STARTED HITTING ALGERIAN TEAM IN EGYPT SO NOW WHY ARE THEY CRYING ,THEY TRYING TO GET PUBLIC SYMPATHY BY WEARING THE VICTIM CLOTHES AND USING THERE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES TO INSULT ALGERIA ,THE THING IS I M NOT EGYPTIAN AND I M NOT ALGERIAN I HAVE SEEN WHAT HAPPENED SO I THINK EGYPT IS GUILTY , THEY SHOULD APOLOGIZE AND PUT THERE NOZE WHERE IT BELONG S TO AND THAT S THE GROUND ,BECAUSE THOSE CHEAP ACTRESSES OF EGYPT AND ACTORS AND SINGERS ARE SAYING BAD THINGS AND THEY ACTUALLY FORGOT ABOUT THE HUNGER THAT THERE COUNTRY IS LIVING IN ,AND TRYING EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL ,THE INTERESTING THING IS THAT MORE THAN 60% OF EGYPTIANS ARE ILLETERATE SO I D ONT BLAME THERE ACT WHEN ALGERIAN PLAYED IN THERE COUNTRY ,TOTAL BARBARIC ,AND I WAS IN EGYPT I KNOW HOW THOSE PPL LIVE ACTUALLY THE RICH GETS RICHER AND THE POOR GET POORER , AND THOSE RICH PPL THEY THINK THEY BECOME LIKE WESTERN , AND THEY ARE JUST COWARD WHEN PALESTINE NEEDED THEM TO OPEN RAFA7 THEY JUST STEPT BACK LIKE PIGS SO I WAS HAPPY WHEN I SAW WHAT HEPPENED TO EGYPTIAN IN SUDAN BECAUSE MAN ZARA3A HASSADA , AND THAT S A GOOD LESSON TO THEM ,NEXT TIME KEEP FOOTBALL ACLEAN GAME

I tried unfortually to find videos or photos on the supposed attacks of Algerians on egyptians in sudan and there are tons on egypchiens of violence in Cairo, I ask the wise Egyptian to explain that, like you know we've only one TV official chain and little numbre of private newspaper. The really space of freedom that we've is INTERNET.

Some of the Egyptian comments are sooooooo funny!

2000 Algerian fans went to Cairo, these weren't special forces. Egyptians, after brutalizing the Algerian national team and supporters, somehow think Algeria is to blame for allaegedly sending over violent fans in military aircraft- Egypt is supposed to be a country of educated people. Man, its unbelievable how ignorant Egyptians are - we should close the embassy and tax the hell out of Orascom (wait we already did that, chuckle). Not a cent or fils should go to Egypt - they are a disgrace!!

You deserve getting your a55es kicked just because of your silly comments and bad attitude. Algerians never forgive and never forget - you attacked our team and then complained about our violence. You attack and then claim that you're the victim, you've clearly learned from your neighbor - what's next - claiming Algeria doesn't recognize your right to exist?

North Africa unanimously supported Algeria, the Middle East after initially supporting Egypt realized Algeria was the victim and thank God - winner. When the Algerians arrived in Sudan, the Sudanese took them out of the hotel and put them up in mansions!! Viva Sudan!! Viva Algeria! Viva USA! Viva UAE on their National Day! Viva Morocco! Viva Egyptian ignorance!

Peace Out

The Egyptians used everything to weaken the Algerian team. The Algerians were too smart for them. They left Egypt with a tie otherwise they would have died in Egypt if ...they won the qualification in Cairo.
Then the Algerians showed the Egyptians that they are stronger on the field...and outside the field.
The Egyptians uses always intimidation in Egypt against better teams than theirs. It's known.
Good slap to Egypt by Algeria!

Good luck Algeria in WC 2010.

The problem is that everyone knew about what happened in Egypt. Even though there were exaggeration s, but no one knew about what happened in Sudan. I have a question. Since, you talked about the French. Why the Algerians freed themselves from the French, but now they are following them blindly. I think Algeria will be much better if France rules it formally. The French will make Algeria more civilized, organized, and educated country. There is no doubt that France is a great country. Vive le France! Et Vive L’ Amerique! Vive l’ Egypt! Et Vive les Chretiens d' Egypt! France thankfully gave the Algerians the privilege to be able to go to France for education, but the Algerian use that in the wrong way, and no one go to college there, but most of them become criminals on the street there. The French will make Algeria organized, civilized, and educated country. If the Egyptians were given that privilege, they all will be graduated from Sorbonne.

The whole world know about what happened to algerian team in Egypt. How come just egyptians think like that. The media were there. France media were there. The algerian team were not protected from fans on theit way to hotel from the airoport. The Egyptians were planning to hurt algerian team to be able to beat them. But it did not work. Egyptians Scored their at the over time. Now we should wait and watch algeria in the world cup in south africa. Good luck to Algeria and best wishes to Egyptian team in 20014.

I did not bring politics. I just broght facts. Algerians think that they are more civilized, and I am say no they are not. Policts is actually involved with everything. If you are civilized, you will show that in all your acts. I said Mr President Obama did not go to Maca or Algeria, but he went to Cairo. That really means a lot if you think about it for a second. We are civilized more than anyone think.

Well, the main problem is that the whole thing is twisted. The Egyptians did not hurt the Algerians; the Algerians fought with each others in the bus and faked the whole thing. However, when the Egyptians went to Sudan, they found that all Algerians are there prepared for almost a war. The Algerians exceeded the limit that was approved by fife. Even if an Egyptian throws a stone, it does not mean to send thousands of Algerians to fight in Sudan. People ignored what happened in Sudan. Let us open our minds and think objectively. The Algerians are known for being violent, and they fought with Egyptians before in 84. Who attacked properties in Europe? The Answer is simple which is the Algerians.

This is just a soccer a game. We should keep it just as soccer game and have fun. There is no reason to bring politics here. Algerians went to egypt to play soccer game not to receive stones from Egyptians. If you have politics problems, you should not bring it to soccer game. That is why Egyptians got mixed. Proud of what !!.. Just play soccer and have fun..I am proud to be Algerian American but I do not see any relation with that about soccer game Algeria Egypt.

It is too strange to find people throw stones in the 21st on guest players. Egyptians throw stones on thier guest algerian team.We have to be honest..Egyptians started first to throw stones on algerian team...How come you are not civilized and you ask others to be. It is not the first time egyptians did that. They did the same thing with Zimbabaw . And the game between Egypt and Zimbabwe was played in France instead of Egypt...Another time They did with Tunisia. We should not hide that egyptians are not fair-play.

What a lot of people did not know is that the egyptians were victims of the Algerian barbarian acts. That is not new for Algerians. They are always violent in their acts. The egyptians were the cream of the cream who went to Sudan such as minters, actors, actresses, and rich people who can afford to buy the tickets. On the other hands the algerians were prisoners who were delivered in airforce planes. The algerians purchased weapons before the match to be ready for the fight after the game. However, most of the world got the opposite picture. I am American Egyptian, and I am proud of being American and Egyptian. I am also proud that Obama went to Cairo to speak to the rest of the world. He did not go the Maca or Algreria, but he went to Egypt.

I must say I am very dissapointed in the Egyptians I've seen posting on forums. Imagine the following scenario:

An American team (wrestling, football baseball...whatever) goes to Egypt where they are promptly attacked and suffer injury including trauma to the head from rocks and broken glass (the first rock thrown went through one side of the bus and out the other side window). Reports emerge that the police who were supposed to protect America's team hung back and let it happen.

The American players decide to play on despite the attack, but are visibly shaken. They play the worst game you've ever seen them play. Every time an Egyptian player pushes one of them to the ground, the Egyptian crowd goes wild.

Egyptians blame Americans for violence after the match even though 20 American fans are wounded to 12 Egyptian (2000 US fans attend the match compared to 50000 Egyptians).
How would you feel as an American?

I can tell you Algerians will never let this go now. Egyptians that are stoking the fires in the media are so low for trying (and frankly the national squad) to win this way and for not accepting any responsibility. I wouldn't be surprised if Algeria signed a military pact with Israel after this. Egypt always accuses Israel of being aggressive and then playing the victim: that is exactly how Egypt behaved in this case. Maybe they always behave that way?

FIFA shouldn't allow any more games to be played in Cairo stadium. How could they after this? I hear Egypt threatened to boycott football after this. Oh no, what a shame! Lets see what they're enquiry comes up with.

Algeria sent soldiers to support its team in Sudan! It is so strange to find a government in the 21st thinking in such a way!

I think all what happened and still happening is over-rated and I blame the media for it. It is just a soccer game. Congrats. to the Algerian team, and this should in no way affect the relationship between the 2 countries.

Soccer has been always known for its agression between fans especially in such sensitive games...sometimes reaching deaths(In 1985 italian fans were killed - Thirty-nine Juventus football fans have died during rioting at the European Cup Final in Brussels.
The tragedy occured when a wall collapsed in the stadium and crushed Juventus fans as they tried to escape Liverpool supporters)

Let the FIFA punish whoever deserves to be punished.
Again this is a soccer game - Don't let the whole world make fun of us. Plus anyway none of the 2 teams will even make it to the second round in the world cup.

The FIFA were in EGYPT when algerian players were attacked by these bad stupid fans egyptians(imagine they throw stones ont algerian palyers). FIFA will start sanction egypt in the next few days. You can read that on FIFA website. Egyptian goverment should applogized for what happend to Algerian players. But instead they told the world, the algerian players made stories. They are responsible for all what happened.

Algeria is the best .They won. All players play in europe (League 1). This algerian team beated egypt twice.
Now the loosers try to blame the others. The game was on the field. Their goal was great and fantastic. It was very clean goal. Egyptians, please try for next world cup 2014 and stop crying.

Egyptians think people are stupid.Egyptians throw stones on algerian players in Egypt. They started all this problem and now they try to look nice beacuse they lose the game. Shame on you. You should be banned from soccer forever.

What is happening has absolutely nothing to do with the way the Algerians behaved after the play off in Sudan ,and when I think about it as an Arab i feel shame , disgrace and anger , before starting to try and get the support of everybody you can dear Egyptians , remember the Algerian team you have stoned in Cairo to pressure them to loose on the 14th of November , now we do apologise for spoiling your plans or should i say the plans of the Egyptian family that is in power , as Mr Jamel and his father were absolutely sure that the Egyptian football team will win and the plan was to play on the victory to get the people to rally behind Jamel offering him the power to rule them as successor to his father who is 81 years old ! but the unimaginable happened and a great Algerian football team won , that lead for that Moubarakien dream to inherit Egypt to vanish which had disastrous consequences on them , so the next mission to try and get the Egyptian ppl to buy into what they say and rally behind the family in power is to create a common enemy that ( so the Egyptian royalties said through Mr Al'aa ) disgraced Egyptians and must be fought , the sad bit is in both situations is the Egyptian ppl are the only losers in all this , and what they need is democracy !!
The Algerians will not let you use them to create another suppressing regime to create more misery and poverty in Egypt and I really hope the Americans won’t allow it .
And for the info , Algerian ppl fought a bloody war against terrorism when many other Arab regimes where harbouring them and providing them with weapons and the whole world is witness so please don't play on that because it won't work !

Its so funny to imagine it might matter to us -Egyptians - when algeria won in a football match , meanwhile algerians were performing manslaughter outside the stadium against Egyptians.
not long ago we won over the Italian team ,we scored 3 goals playing with Brazil , where both teams were 10000000000 times better than the algerians !!

the funnier thing is that we won this algerian team by scoring 2 goals , couple of days earlier than the match in Sudan!!
so for mohssan & Da man posts , it seems u both have short memory loss or something , or , what do we call , as new money , new winners ?
the real issue is very clear , for any one who can browse the web to view vivid evidence of the algerian violence.
