IRAN: Opposition leaders call for another demonstration Thursday

Iranian opposition leaders are calling their supporters into the streets to mourn those killed in clashes with security forces, defying a harsh warning from the country’s elite Revolutionary Guard to stop protesting the outcome of the disputed presidential election.

A post on the Facebook page of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s main challenger, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, says there will be another “peaceful demonstration in Tehran’ on Thursday and asks for updates on solidarity rallies around the world.

Agence France-Presse reports that a similar announcement appears in Persian on the website of another presidential candidate, Mehdi Karroubi.

Opposition leaders have urged their supporters to show restraint amid a deadly crackdown. The Revolutionary Guard warns demonstrators in a statement posted on its site to expect a ‘revolutionary confrontation” if they persist.
