Can Lady Gaga spin her MTV EMA wins into Grammy gold?

After all, she beat rivals for best song that may be nominated for the same top prize at the Grammys: Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie," Katy Perry's "California Gurls" and Usher's "OMG."  Furthermore, let's not forget that Lady Gaga romped at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this year with her videos, claiming seven trophies, including video of the year ("Bad Romance").

But beware: MTV's awards don't often line up with the Grammys. None of the recent winners of best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards was even nominated for best record or song by the U.S. recording academy: Beyonce's "Halo" (2009), Pink's "So What" (2008) or Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" (2007). With "Ray of Light," she finally broke into the general field (those top three Grammy categories), but victory has been elusive in the marquee races. Her only Grammys were in the lower categories for pop, dance and movie music and videos.
