Poll: Who'll win best villain at the MTV Movie Awards?

Tom-felton1The battle over best villain at the MTV Movie Awards is really scary. For prognosticators, that is — because it's very hard to predict. Tom Felton seems to be out front to take the prize this Sunday night because his diabolical portrayal of Draco Malfoy in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" won last year. It was so formidable that Felton even beat Oscar winner Christoph Waltz as Quentin Tarantino's fiendish Nazi in "Inglourious Basterds."

But watch out: Waltz has returned and is out for revenge as Benjamin Chudnofsky/Bloodnofsky in "The Green Hornet." Another formidable foe: Leighton Meester who terrified millions of movie-goers in "The Roommate." Who do you think will win?

Poll: Who'll win best kiss at the MTV Movie Awards?

Natalie-portman-mila-kunis-kissingNormally, when trying to predict who'll win the battle over best kiss at the MTV Movie Awards, it's safe to bet on "Twilight Saga" stars. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have won the category the last two years for the original "Twilight" and its "New Moon" sequel.

However, this year there are two nominee pairings from "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" -- Kristen Stewart's latest pucker with Pattinson, plus her sneaky smooch with Taylor Lautner. If they split the "Twilight" vote, then that means that all three could get, well, a big kiss-off at the MTV Movie Awards.

Daniel Radcliffe's awkward kiss with Emma Watson in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1" could prevail, but beware: Radcliffe's earlier lip lock with Katie Leung in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" lost to Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman's smooch in "Step Up 2: The Streets" (2008).

A more likely usurper will be the girl-on-girl action between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in "Black Swan." This category has a history of same-sex kisses winning like Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen ("Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," 2007) and Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal ("Brokeback Mountain," 2006).

Polls: Will 'Twilight Saga: Eclipse' sweep the MTV Movie Awards?

Twilight Saga Eclipse News"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" is probably a shoo-in to win best picture at the MTV Movie Awards, which will be doled out Sunday. After all, the first two installments of "The Twilight Saga" won the top prize in 2009 and 2010.

But what about the other categories? Is it possible that a bit of "Twilight" fatigue has set in? That's hard to imagine considering "New Moon" and its stars swept all five of its MTV Movie Award categories last year: best film, male performance (Robert Pattinson), female performance (Kristen Stewart), kiss (Pattinson and Stewart) and global superstar (Pattinson). It lost only two nominations and those were in categories where one "Twilight" contender beat another. (Pattinson crushed Taylor Lautner for best actor and Stewart for global superstar.)

Stewart has won best actress here for the last two years, but her loss to Pattinson in the superstar race suggests she might be vulnerable. She faces a major challenge in the lead actress contest from recent Oscar champ Natalie Portman in "Black Swan," which is so popular that it's also up for best picture at the MTV Movie Awards.

Check out the predictions of our forum posters.

Thursday Roundup: Oscar presenters, MTV awards, Polanski support and more

95950338

Well, how's this for a morbid item: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released an item Thursday stating that "all three living performers" (italics mine) who won Oscars last year will present at the 82nd annual Academy Awards. That's a somewhat carnival-esque way of saying that Sean Penn (best actor for "Milk"), Kate Winslet (actress, "The Reader") and Penelope Cruz (supporting actress, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona") will attend the March 7 ceremony; the supporting actor winner, Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight"), sadly passed away Jan. 22, 2008, and therefore could not be included in this wince-worthy come-on. But, hey, Oscars!

Speaking of telecasts and things to make you wince, will the 2010 MTV Movie Awards and Video Music Awards feature anything as cringe-inducing as the sight of Sacha Baron Cohen landing keister-first on Eminem or Kanye West hogging Taylor Swift's spotlight? Los Angeles residents will be the first to know, as MTV is reporting that both events will air live from the City of Angels this year; the 2010 MTV Movie Awards will broadcast June 6, while the 27th VMAs are set for Sept. 12.

Meanwhile, the London Times Online has an interview with playwright and screenwriter Ronald Harwood, who has added his voice to the growing support for director Roman Polanski. In the feature, Harwood, who won the Oscar in 2003 for his script for Polanski's "The Pianist," discusses the challenge in defending the filmmaker in the face of his 1977 criminal charge for sex with an underage girl but ultimately concludes, "He changed my life, and I support him." Harwood, who also penned 2005's "Oliver Twist" for Polanski in addition to his Oscar-nominated screenplays for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (2007) and "The Dresser" (1983), also has choice comments on Clint Eastwood's "Invictus" (Harwood wrote 1987's "Mandela" for American television) and 2008's "Australia," which he also wrote.

Lee Daniels is also full of praise Thursday evening for a fellow filmmaker; the Oscar-nominated director of "Precious" was cited in a CBC News article as describing Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award winner and recent Directors Guild of America lifetime achievement winner Norman Jewison as a major influence on his work. In the piece, Daniels singled out Jewison's Oscar-winning "In the Heat of the Night" (1967) and "A Soldier's Story" (1984), which received three Oscar nominations, as films that changed his life and inspired him to follow in Jewison's footsteps. Both men also discuss the challenges they faced in bringing controversial images and ideas to the screen -- the sight of Sidney Poitier striking a white murder suspect in "Night" and the tragic backstory of "Precious," which involves incest and abuse.

Anatomy of an award show crasher, Part 1: Kanye West

Mtv625sept14

First in a semi-regular series on memorable onstage intrusions, interruptions and other failures of decorum at award shows throughout history.

The chickens, as it were, appear to be coming home to roost for Kanye West. As Todd Martens reported yesterday on the Pop and Hiss blog, West's much-publicized tour with Lady Gaga has been canceled with no explanation and no rescheduled dates on the horizon. The news launched a flurry of speculation as to how much West's onstage tirade over Taylor Swift's win for female video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 14 affected this cancellation. Though apologies were proffered on West's blog and "The Jay Leno Show," the bad taste left in many viewers' mouths, combined with West's announcement that he planned to take some time off, may have led to this decision.

The details regarding the Swift incident -- West taking to the stage to defend Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video amid a chorus of boos from the audience and an eventual removal from Radio City Music Hall -- have been covered ad nauseam, and the press and public (even the president) have voiced collective disgust at a grown man's boorishness in the face of a teenage girl's win on a major awards show. West has, of course, apologized repeatedly on television, most notably on "The Jay Leno Show," where the Leno appeared to move West to tears with the kitchen table admonishment, "What would your mother think about this?" Of course, all this public penance was followed by a caveat: "I'm not crazy y'all," he noted on his blog. "I'm just real."

But West has made something of a second career out of interrupting award shows and badmouthing losses. Many who saw his outburst in the middle of Swift's speech assumed this was a moment of eccentricity, but in the past few years West has racked up a number of similar incidents at award shows on both sides of the Atlantic.

Turn back the clock, if you will, to 2004, when West was topping critical charts with his debut CD, "The College Dropout," and racking up music award nominations. When the best new artist was announced at the American Music Awards, however, it was Gretchen Wilson's name in the envelope, not West's, and he responded by unleashing a profanity-laced tirade to reporters backstage. An apology to Wilson, hinged on his upbringing ("I was raised better than that"), was soon issued, but a scant three months later a comment followed that he "should not be let on stage" at the Grammys. Thus, the Kanye West Award Show Crash Pattern was established: the outburst over a perceived slight, then the heartfelt apology, then the follow-up comment that essentially says, "You ain't seen nothing yet."

Skip ahead to 2006, and Kanye is again breaking into winners' speeches, this time at the MTV Europe Music Awards. When Justice and Simon's "We Are Your Friends" took home the best video award over West's colossally overblown production for "Touch the Sky" -- a lopsided tribute to Evel Knievel featuring Pamela Anderson -- the rapper again bounded to the stage to protest his loss. His umbrage appeared to center around the failure to appreciate the video's production values: "It cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it ... I was jumping across canyons," he sputtered, adding, "If I don't win, the award show loses credibility." Well, someone loses credibility. Later, West presented his usual mea culpa, citing a bit too much "sippy sippy" as the culprit. Later, he would wonder publicly in an interview for Rolling Stone (which featured him on the cover in Jesus Christ post, complete with crown of thorns) how people actually believed that he wouldn't do such a thing.

And those who did believe were pretty much shown up by his tantrum at the 2007 MTV Music Awards, when Britney Spears was chosen to open the show instead of him. Before the show, West was badmouthing Spears' track record, citing her lack of hits in recent years. Things got noticeably louder after  he failed to take home an award any of the five categories in which he was nominated. "I'm trying hard," he griped backstage after the show, before vowing that he would never perform on MTV again. Later, on a radio interview, he justified the whole blowout as a part of MTV's attempt to dissuade performers from appearing on the main stage, which thwarted his "dream" of making the show a bigger event when he penned his single, "Stronger."

So where does this all leave West circa October 2009? Out of work, for one, but with the opportunity to take any number of paths to improve his situation. Whether he decides to stay "real" or take a genuine look at the effect of his actions on his career remains to be seen.

Eminem will perform live on MTV Movie Awards

He’s sold 75 million records, won an Oscar for best song and even married the same woman twice. And now rapper Eminem is performing live on the 18th annual MTV Movie Awards on May 31.  Of course, Eminem also has a new album he needs to plug: “Relapse,” which is set for release just two weeks before the MTV awards. So the irreverently hip ceremony is the perfect showcase for the controversial artist's latest work. Andy Samberg is this year’s host of the movie awards.
