Awards season may still be months away, but actor Vin Diesel is already prognosticating about the Oscar race.

That’s right -- the bulky action star told us in a recent interview that he thinks his latest film, ‘Fast Five,’ has a legitimate shot at scoring an Academy Award nomination later this year.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some Oscar talk around this,’ said the actor, who has appeared in four of the five movies that make up the popular franchise featuring high-speed cars.

‘I don’t know, maybe I’m just biting off what some guy from Channel 7 thought. But sooner or later, people are gonna say, ‘Wait a minute, just because they are for the working class doesn’t mean they’re not great.’’

Diesel, not one for false modesty, did not elaborate on which category he thought ‘Fast Five’ had the best chance in. But if he was referring to the prize for best actor, academy members might have a hard time deciding whether to spotlight the nuanced performance of Diesel himself or that of costars Paul Walker and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. And if it scores one of the 10 slots for best picture, well, at least it would be a change from the British monarchs and psychotic ballerinas we got this year.
