Marisa Tomei + Lady Gaga = Oscar?

‘I would have Marisa Tomei play me,’ Lady Gaga recently said about which actress she’d like to see portray her on the silver screen. ‘I am such a Marisa Tomei fan. All my friends call me Marisa when I get angry, because my New York accent just flies out of my body and I start smacking my gum.’

Tomei graciously accepted the compliment as she toured the promo circuit for ‘Lincoln Lawyer.’ She told the gals on ‘The View’ that she admired Gaga’s business sense as well as her singing. ‘I was so touched, really. I think it’s incredible that she likes my work and that she’d think of me that way,’ she said. ‘I thought it was great.’

Sure, the casting suggestion is preposterous considering Tomei is 46 and Lady Gaga is 24, but let’s run with the idea for a bit. Is it preposterous to think Tomei might get nominated for — or win — an Oscar for portraying Lady Gaga if the film was really, really good? Few pundits thought she had a prayer to win in 1992 for her trashy, gum-snapping screen role in ‘My Cousin Vinny.’ After all, comedic roles rarely get noticed by academy voters.

Tomei will soon be teaming on screen with fellow New Yorker Sarah Jessica Parker in ‘Married and Cheating,’ an ensemble dramedy about unhappy couples working out their marital woes.
