The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that it has begun an interactive Oscar-themed sidewalk display at 1333 Broadway in New York City. The window display features nine linked 46-inch LCD screens that, according to the academy, ‘literally envelope passers-by in a virtual ‘red carpet experience.’ As people walk past the 8-foot wall of LCD screens, sensors will react to the passerby’s motion, which will kick off a virtual paparazzi of flashing cameras and spotlights.

The display also features two digital photo stations at which people can pose for photos while clutching a virtual Oscar. As they digitally accept the Oscar, a keyboard displays, allowing them to e-mail their photo to themselves or whomever they want.

Academy directors, if you’re reading this, this could be a pretty big hit on Hollywood Boulevard too.
