Oscars academy awards news quiz

ANSWER: "Peyton Place" (1957) is considered to be one of Oscar's weakest choices for a best-picture nomination. The snubs of "The African Queen" (1951), "Now, Voyager" (1942) and "Some Like It Hot" (1959) are widely considered to be some of the worst oversights in Oscar history. The cold shoulder received by "Hot" is proof that Oscar has no sense of humor. The American Film Institute ranks "Some Like It Hot" as the greatest comedy ever made.

I am not sure who the source being quoted is who thinks that "Peyton Place" was one of Oscar's weakest BP choices ever... This quote certainly does not take into consideration popular opinion of the day in 1957. Producer Jerry Wald, director Mark Robson and screenwriter John Michael Hayes performed the remarkable feat of making a major motion picture based on a book which had been deemed unfilmable when it was published due to its strong adult content. Furthermore, a record FIVE actors were nominated for their work in the film: Lana Turner, Russ Tamblyn, Hope Lange, Diane Varsi and Arthur Kennedy. That certainly should be worth something. The fact that a subsequent TV soap opera and an inferior motion picture sequal were spawned from the original film may have tarnished its reputation, but it should NOT have....
