Hailee Steinfeld, the 14-year-old star of ‘True Grit,’ said that she was ‘in shock’ Tuesday morning after being nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar for her role as the plucky Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers’ Western. ‘I was asleep in my bed,’ Steinfeld said. ‘I woke up to my parents screaming in the other room. It’s amazing. It’s crazy. Just a year ago I was auditioning for the role and thinking whoever gets this is like winning the lotto. All of this coming with it is just so crazy.’

Steinfeld, who was taking the day off from being home-schooled, said that she thinks the character’s independent streak has reached a lot of people. When asked about her favorite scene in the film, which earned a total of 10 Oscar nominations including best picture, she couldn’t choose just one, saying: ‘Watching the film, I watch it and think about what happened behind the camera. I remember how much fun I had filming all of them.’

She said she’s a little nervous about negotiating the Oscars’ famous red carpet. ‘I get nervous for everything,’ she said, adding that working the press lines is getting a little easier with every event she attends. ‘I’m sort of getting the hang of it. I take my deep breaths, and I just go for it.’

And those rumors about her starring in the big-screen adaptation of ‘The Hunger Games’? Steinfeld said, ‘I’m reading the books now. I’m looking forward to auditioning.’
