Nine foreign-language films continue in Oscar race
And then there were nine.
Sixty-six films originally qualified in the foreign language film category for the 83rd annual Academy Awards. Nine have made the cut and will advance to the next round, when the number will narrowed down to five final nominees.
The nine films announced Wednesday morning are:
"Hors la Loi," directed by Rachid Bouchareb (Algeria)
"Incendies," directed by Denis Villeneuve (Canada)
"In a Better World," directed by Susanne Bier (Denmark)
"Dogtooth," directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (Greece)
"Confessions," directed by Tetsuya Nakashima (Japan)
"Biutiful," directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Mexico)
"Life Above All," directed by Oliver Schmitz (South Africa)
"Tambien la Lluvia," directed by Iciar Bollain (Spain)
"Simple Simon," directed by Andreas Ohman (Sweden)
The Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday and the awards will be presented Feb. 27.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was nominated for what again? Oh yes, and Oh no -- Absolutely Nothing. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Sure, I can buy that -- uh...not, not times a lot. It is a truly excellent film, easily as worthy as more than half of the films nominated by the Academy (in any category). Really, what an absurdly asinine, braindead snub. (Oh, and if someone points out that in some countries that film was released in 2009, rather than 2010, then please also note that it was nominated for the same silly Nada by the Academy last year as well. It was, however, released in the USA in 2010.) In this regard, see the current BAFTA (British "Oscars") nominations to see something far more sensible and fair, and, yes...awake and aware. And once again -- sorry Academy, it is very difficult to take you seriously. So I, like many others, very rarely do.
