If it seemed a little surprising to you that ‘Barney’s Version’ star Paul Giamatti took the Golden Globe award for best actor in comedy or musical over some higher-profile contenders from bigger hits such as, perhaps, Johnny Depp from ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ Giamatti himself was suprised too.

‘I was very shocked,’ he said backstage, then, to the question of who he thought was going to win, replied: ‘I don’t know, Depp? I’d give it to Depp. He’s a great-looking guy.’

In the movie, adapted from a book by Mordecai Richler, Giamatti plays an older man looking back at his complicated life. The film remains a niche release in the U.S., but the actor says this is exactly the kind of movie that could benefit from some Globes attention. ‘I really hope it raises the [film’s] profile.’
