Roman Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer' is front-runner to win top European Film Award

The ghost writer roman polanski newsRoman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" continues to spook award-watchers who underestimate the political thriller by the controversial helmer. It leads with the most nominations at the European Film Awards (seven), including best European picture, director and actor (Ewan McGregor).

Two months ago "The Ghost Writer" was voted best film by the international film-critics group FIPRESCI, and it's expected to win the top prize at the European Film Awards ceremony in Tallinn, Estonia, on Dec. 4, but Polanski isn't expected to attend considering his arrest in 2009 when he left France to attend the Zurich Film Festival.

Oddities among the nominees include "The Secret in Their Eyes" competing for Best European Picture even though it won the Oscar as Argentina's submission last February. Just as peculiar is the inclusion of "Lebanon," which also doesn't seem like a European film since it's set inside an Israeli tank during the 1982 war on Lebanon. However, both qualify because they were coproductions of companies based in Europe. "Lebanon" also seems a bit old, having won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival more than a year ago.

Over at In Contention, Guy Lodge throws a doozy of a tantrum over these nominations and what they miss. Addressing the academy's nominating members, he roars, "You seem to have suffered some form of collective amnesia in recalling the last 12 months of European cinema …. The following are all European films superior to the six you shortlisted in your top category: 'Another Year,' 'The Illusionist,' 'How I Ended This Summer,' 'Kawasaki's Rose,' 'White Material,' 'Dogtooth,' 'Certified Copy,' 'Mysteries of Lisbon,' 'Four Lions,' 'The Mouth of the Wolf,' and so on … Juliette Binoche’s peak-form, Cannes-awarded performance in 'Certified Copy' is a doozy of a turn to miss."
